This cover is addressed to Pardon Brown. It is assuredly from his brother or sister-in-law. Peleg Brown was an early arrival in the Truckee Meadows. Stone and Gates are credited with arriving and settling (at least starting a way station) in 1857. Shortly thereafter, arrived Leonard Savage (Savage Mine, Savage and Sons Plumbing), G. W. Huffaker (Huffaker's Ranch, Huffaker's School), and Peleg Brown (Brown's Station).
Peleg claimed to have been the first person to build a stone house in the valley and to be the first white person to spend the winter in the meadows.
In 1863 Peleg brought and raised the first alfalfa crop. It was so successful many others followed. Today you can till see thousands of acres of alfalfa growing around the area.
Brown's Ranch became a stop on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

As a rancher, Peleg was always interested in water. His ranch was served by Brown's Ditch, but he understood the need for a larger more complete irrigation system. He was a stockholder and one of the organizers of the Steamboat Canal Company. He is credited with being one of five local ranchers to build the canal.
He did not shirk his civic responsibility either. In 1872 he was elected a county commissioner. He was to be a juror on the William Sides (a rather notorious character who supposedly committed the first murder in Nevada) trial, but the case was withdrawn. Peleg was also served on grand juries, was inspector of voting, and a delegate to the state Republican convention.
